Open Awards Trustees, Committee Members and colleagues came together on 18 June for the organisation’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), taking the opportunity to reflect on a successful year and look ahead to the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of education and skills.
Chair Harm van Zalinge opened the meeting by recognising the dedication, expertise and commitment shown by the Open Awards team throughout the year. He also reflected on the organisation’s ongoing 45th anniversary celebrations, marking more than four decades of creating opportunities for learners and supporting education providers across the UK.
Chief Executive Officer Heather Akehurst shared an overview of the year’s achievements, outlining how Open Awards has continued to adapt and grow in an evolving qualifications landscape. Despite significant policy and funding changes across the sector, the organisation has maintained its low-risk regulatory status, expanded its recognition in Wales and continued to prepare for future qualifications and apprenticeship reforms.
The AGM also recognised the important role played by Open Awards’ Trustees, thanking outgoing Trustees Lynn Adam, Ben Jordan and Blessing Maregere for their valued contributions. Members approved the election of Fern-Chantele Carter, Benjamin Cowling-Monks, Graeme Carter, Vicky Stott and Jasmine Lewis-Keedwell to the Board, alongside the re-election of Julie Barnes (Armitage) and Mat Bennett.
Looking ahead, Open Awards remains committed to supporting learners, providers and employers through a period of significant change, while continuing to develop qualifications and services that respond to the needs of communities, educators and industry.
As Open Awards celebrates its 45th year, the AGM reflected an organisation that continues to evolve with purpose and confidence, supported by a dedicated staff team, a strong Board of Trustees and a shared commitment to widening access to education and skills.
