Open Awards receives the Freedom of the City of Liverpool

We are beyond delighted to announce that Open Awards has been awarded the Freedom of the City of Liverpool, one of the highest civic honours the city can bestow.

The award, also known as the Freedom Roll of Associations, recognises organisations and individuals who have had a remarkable positive impact on the local community and the international standing of the city.

The honour comes at a meaningful moment for Open Awards, marking 45 years since the inception of the Open College Network North West Region and 21 years since it became Open Awards.

Heather Akehurst OBE, our Chief Executive Officer, said:
“We are absolutely thrilled to learn that in our 45th year Open Awards has been awarded the Freedom of the City of Liverpool. Thank you to all our trustees and colleagues both past and present.”

Open Awards was recognised alongside a number of other respected organisations and individuals, including Liverpool Harriers and Athletics Club, Xi’an Jiaotong (XJTLU) and Michael Eakin OBE.

Speaking about the awards, the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Barbara Murray, said:

“Liverpool is fortunate to have so many organisations and individuals who make a significant contribution to life in the city. The civic honours provide us with an opportunity to shine a spotlight on their work and recognise the positive difference they make.”

This recognition reflects Open Awards’ long-standing commitment to widening participation in education and supporting achievement for learners, providers and communities across the region and beyond.
