Access to HE Diploma – Subject Specialist Moderators

TITLE OF POST: Access to HE Diploma – Subject Specialist Moderator

LOCATION: Remote / home-based

CONTRACT TYPE: Contracted services (self-employed)

SALARY:  Payment will be based on a rate per assignment (Reasonable travel and expenses paid in addition to agreed rate)*


We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated subject specialist moderator to contribute to our external quality assurance team for Access to HE Diplomas. We are particularly interested in appointing a subject specialist to cover the following modules:

  • Education
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • English
  • Health Studies
  • History
  • Politics
  • Psychology
  • Social Work
  • Sociology
  • Sport and Exercise
  • Veterinary Science and Zoology

Subject specialist moderators help Open Awards ensure that the operation, assessment and grading of Access to HE Diplomas remain valid, reliable and fit for purpose across our network of providers.

Work will be undertaken on a contractual basis throughout the year and will be undertaken remotely. As a moderator, you would be allocated a number of units and providers to review delivery and internal quality assurance arrangements, assignment briefs and moderate student work. Working as part of a team, you will provide feedback for providers, set improvement actions and ensure that grades awarded are valid and accurate. You will be expected to contribute to standardisation event for units within your subject specialism and may be invited to undertake developmental activities. 

*Please note: due to current Covid-19 restrictions, all activity will be completed remotely until further notice.

Skills and Experience Required: 

  • A sound understanding of the Access to HE Diploma
  • A relevant degree or other equivalent qualification at level 4 or above
  • Experience of teaching/quality assurance in the relevant subject area at Level 3 or above
  • The ability to produce excellent reports to agreed deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven organisational ability
  • A commitment to equal opportunities and widening participation

The successful candidate must be available for an immediate start on a contracted basis.

Please note, appointment to the bank of subject specialist moderators does not necessarily guarantee that work will be available in any particular year.
