Access to HE Diploma – Subject Specialist Moderators

TITLE OF POST: Access to HE Diploma – Subject Specialist Moderators

LOCATION: Remote / home-based

CONTRACT TYPE: Contracted services (self-employed)

SALARY:  Payment will be based on a rate per assignment (Reasonable travel and expenses paid in addition to agreed rate)*


We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated subject specialist moderators to contribute to our external quality assurance team for Access to HE Diplomas. We are particularly interested in appointing subject specialists in:

  • Digital skills
  • Ecology
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Environmental
  • Film Media and Culture
  • Geography
  • Hospitality Management
  • Law
  • Mathematics
  • Maths for Computing
  • Media Make-up
  • Performing Arts
  • Physics
  • Politics
  • Travel and Tourism
  • Zoology

Subject specialist moderators help Open Awards to ensure that the operation, assessment and grading of Access to HE Diplomas remains valid, reliable and fit for purpose across our network of providers.

Work will be undertaken on a contractual basis throughout the year and will be undertaken remotely. As a moderator, you would be allocated a number of units and providers to review delivery and internal quality assurance arrangements, assignment briefs and moderate student work. Working as part of a team, you will provide feedback for providers, set improvement actions and ensure that grades awarded are valid and accurate. You will be expected to contribute to standardisation event for units within your subject specialism and may be invited to undertake developmental activities. 

*Please note: due to current Covid-19 restrictions, all activity will be completed remotely until further notice.

Skills and Experience Required: 

  • A sound understanding of the Access to HE Diploma
  • A relevant degree or other equivalent qualification at level 4 or above
  • Experience of teaching/quality assurance in the relevant subject area at Level 3 or above
  • The ability to produce excellent reports to agreed deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven organisational ability
  • A commitment to equal opportunities and widening participation

Please note that appointment to the bank of subject specialist moderators does not necessarily guarantee that work will be available in any particular year.
