Open Awards Bursary
Open Awards is a registered charity and we seek to use our skills, experience and qualifications to promote learning to individuals. In offering bursaries we are seeking to address barriers that may prevent people from accessing training/further education.
Our Vision is that Open Awards bursaries allow learners to access learning/further education by providing financial support where the qualification is not fully funded and/or to address specific barriers that are currently preventing them from studying.
What can I apply for funding for?
- Travel costs
- Technology and/or equipment, where these are not provided or freely available
Please Note: We cannot make any awards towards living expenses.
How much can I apply for?
Bursaries can be for up to £500 per person.
You may only apply for one bursary each year but if your application is rejected in round one, it will automatically be considered again in round 2.
Am I eligible for a Bursary?
The Bursary is open to all learners seeking to access Open Awards qualifications.
To be eligible for an award you must:
- be undertaking an Open Awards course or qualification at an approved Open Awards centre
- be unable to get supporting funds from their college/training organisation
- need the award to successfully complete your course
You must have the support of your college/training provider to apply for a bursary
By applying for a bursary you are consenting to being included in publicity for Open Awards, where this is required, and to being contacted about your future progress, if necessary.
Completing the Application Form
You must make sure that all parts of the form are completed.
Please give as much detail as possible about why you need the bursary, as this will help us to understand evaluate your application. In previous rounds applicants have not given us all the information they can . Use an additional sheet if necessary. There is a word count limit of 350 words for this section.
Your college/training provider must complete and stamp the final section of the form. Again it is important that they give information about you personally and not a generic supporting statement.
Assessment of Applications
A sub-committee of the Open Awards Board will decide which applications can be granted. We receive hundreds of applications for each round and are not able to make all the awards that we would like. Therefore we will prioritise applications according to the information provided by each applicant and the support information from the college/training provider.
In some cases further information may be sought.
All decisions are final and there is no right of appeal, however there is no limit on the amount of times an individual may apply for a bursary in different years. Please note that Open Awards will not enter into discussions about their decisions once they have been made.
Applications are currently assessed once a year.
Deadline for Applications
Applicants will be informed of decisions as soon as possible after the deadline.
