Pathways to Employment

Open Awards’ vision is to change lives through learning. We believe that gaining employment can be one of the most life-changing events for somebody. We have a proud history of supporting centres with a proven track record of supporting learners into meaningful and sustainable employment.

Training and learning is an effective tool in supporting progression to employment across all sectors and this is why themes of progression and employability run throughout all our qualifications and are designed to support progression into employment across all levels.

Our qualifications can be packaged into a range of employment focused models and programmes including Supported Internships, Traineeships and Apprenticeships. The Open Awards team has first hand experience of designing and delivering successful employment programmes and are on hand to share this expertise with you.

How can Open Awards help?

Open Awards can offer advice and expertise on setting up your employment focused programme. With experience of engaging with employers about the skills and qualities required for learners to successfully progress into employment, we can support you with designing your programme model and developing your curriculum.

Work preparation training should be two fold. Firstly offering training on the skills needed to find employment (e.g. job searching, CV writing, interview techniques) and secondly training on skills needed to sustain employment (problem solving, timekeeping, resilience and communication). Our portfolio of regulated qualifications and quality endorsed units offer a flexible approach to teaching these skills. We will work with you to design a curriculum that fits your learners and your employers, ensuring your learners have the best opportunities to progress into employment.

We also offer functional skills (Maths; English; IT) from Entry Level to Level 2 which can be embedded throughout programmes to ensure learners have these vital skills for securing and maintaining employment.

Supported Internships

Supported Internships are a Department for Education study programme aimed at learners aged 16-24 with a Learning Disability Assessment or Education, Health and Care Plan. Only 7% of people with a learning disability nationally are currently in paid employment despite everybody having something valuable to offer an employer. Supported Internships schemes have a success rate of up to 60% progression into paid employment by the end of the year.

Traineeships

Traineeships are designed primarily for 16-24 year olds (or up to age 25 for young people with a Learning Difficulty Assessment or Education, Health and Care Plan), as an intense training and work experience opportunity. The target group are young people with qualifications below level 3, that are not in employment and have little work experience. The expected outcome is progression into employment or an apprenticeship so an important requirement is for the young person to be motivated by work and for the education provider and employer to be confident that the young person can be work-ready in 6 months.
